The Surgical Technologist, also known as a Surgical Technician, is responsible for preparing the operating room, assisting the surgical team during procedures, and ensuring that all surgical instruments and environments meet the highest standards of sterility and safety. This role requires close collaboration with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and registered nurses to ensure that surgeries are performed efficiently and effectively.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Preoperative Preparation:
    • Prepare the operating room by setting up surgical instruments, equipment, and sterile drapes.
    • Check all equipment to ensure it is functioning properly.
    • Ensure that the operating room environment is sterile and that infection control procedures are strictly followed.
  • Intraoperative Duties:
    • Pass instruments, sponges, and other sterile supplies to surgeons during operations.
    • Anticipate the needs of the surgical team by providing the necessary instruments and supplies as needed.
    • Assist in retracting tissues, suctioning, and cutting sutures as directed by the surgeon.
    • Maintain a sterile environment by monitoring the sterile field and identifying any breaches in sterility.
    • Keep a precise count of surgical instruments, sponges, and needles during the procedure to ensure nothing is left inside the patient.
  • Postoperative Duties:
    • Assist in the cleaning and restocking of the operating room after the procedure.
    • Transport patients to recovery rooms as needed.
    • Dispose of contaminated supplies and ensure that instruments are cleaned and sterilized.
    • Document procedures and update patient records as required.

Qualifications:

  • Education:
    • Completion of an accredited Surgical Technologist program (certificate or associate degree).
    • Certification as a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) is preferred.
  • Experience:
    • Previous experience in a surgical technologist role is preferred, but not required for entry-level positions.
  • Skills:
    • Strong understanding of sterile techniques and infection control procedures.
    • Excellent manual dexterity and attention to detail.
    • Ability to work effectively in high-pressure situations.
    • Strong communication and teamwork skills.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to stand for long periods and lift or move patients and equipment.
  • Manual dexterity for handling instruments and operating equipment.
  • The ability to work in an environment with exposure to blood, bodily fluids, and infectious diseases.

Work Environment:

  • The role is primarily based in the operating room of a hospital or surgical center.
  • Shift work may be required, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
